Writing Tip: Principal Investigator Math

"I will be the Principal Investigator on our SBIR/STTR projects. As the PI, I have to spend at least half time on each project. So how can I be the PI on more than 2 SBIR/STTR awards at once?"

We hear that question quite frequently in our SBIR/STTR work.  There are several fallacies contained therein which makes the question irrelevant or (at least) not as important as other things one should be asking about using SBIR/STTR to further their company.  Let's address some of those fallacies.

First, there is an implicit assumption that the proposing company is going to win lots of SBIR/STTR awards, and they will all occur at the same time.  With the odds of a Phase I award being about 1 in 6 (i.e., for every 6 Phase I SBIR proposals that are submitted, only one will be awarded)...

Nebraska Company received two SBIR Air Force Awards
21st Century Systems, Inc. (21CSI)

has been awarded two Phase I Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contracts by the U. S. Air Force.

First

contract supports the development of Space-ACE, a 21CSI decision support system for space control operations.   Space-ACE uses 21CSI's Evidential Reasoning Network technology to blend complex data with human knowledge and judgment to identify potential threats to spacecraft.Steve O'Hara, 21CSI Senior Scientist, said "We are eager to apply our expertise to the challenges of this project with the support of the Air Force to create a truly innovative tool in Space Control."

The Second one is

to support the development of its proposed Video20/20 project, an innovative toolset for real-time Electro-Optics Infrared (EO/IR) video enhancement.
Dr. Amber Fischer, 21CSI Scientist, stated that "Soldiers, airmen, and image analysts are currently hampered by video that is often low-quality and difficult to interpret. By developing a tool that can improve image quality, we can greatly improve the tactical value of every micro and small UAV in service."

The awards are for $100,000 each for work that is expected to take nine months to perform.

21CSI
develops decision support software to help operators manage complex, high-stress, rapidly changing environments through sound, computer-assisted data monitoring and decision making. Intelligent agents embedded in the systems enable the software to adapt, respond, and learn from individual users in a variety of different situations. 21CSI has a100% commercialization index for SBIRs with an extensive record of transitioning its research into useful products.
